Since the dawn of the word processor, we have all learned (usually the hard way…) you just can’t trust those pesky spell & grammar checks. They are basically the devil and usually miss most mistakes anyways. But unfortunately they do help occasionally, so they’ve managed to stick around with all their inaccuracies.
But I have found a better solution: I downloaded a free trial of Grammarly and found a grammar/spell check program that actually works.
This simple app works with individual files (however, it will not accept any Mac Pages documents, much to my disappointment), copy & pasting directly into the app, but also in a browser to make sure all of my emails, posts, etc. are all correct. You may also turn off the browser add-on as it will start “editing” anything you may type, including Google searches.
I am starting to become dependent on Grammarly, but in a good way. I’m beginning to put every piece of writing through just to cover myself and learning from my mistakes in the process. It’s like my own personal editor-robot double checking me, ensuring I don’t make a fool of myself via my writing.
Grammarly thoroughly checks spelling, grammar, sentence structure, & style (including voice) and I have to say it is pretty darn accurate.
Overall, it is very simple to use and free to sign up. Upload your document (or type, or paste) into Grammarly and it will make suggestions and alert you to any issues found in your document with a full explanation.
And it will work with any kind of writing, from academic to personal. You can even make sure that your Facebook status doesn’t have any embarrassing typos:
But really, I can’t say enough good things about this program. Besides not accepting Mac Pages documents, I have no complaints. It is more accurate than the standard check-programs and is making me a better writer who is more confident in my work. And with the free app, there is no excuse not to start utilizing it now!
If you want to get as much as you can out of what Grammarly offers, then I highly recommend purchasing a Premium subscription. For only a few dollars a month, you’ll get a better experience beyond the free package. Premium users get even more advanced features:
Give it a try, there’s nothing to lose!
